A journalism professor at the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University recently demonstrated a low-cost camera drone during a public seminar on drone journalism last week.
Newhouse professor Dan Pacheco lofted a Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 in front of students, and touched on legal and ethical concerns of drone journalism during the seminar.
“I think it’s just a matter of time before this becomes normal,” Pacheco said, according to Syracuse.com.
The Newhouse School also launched a competition for journalism students to win their own AR. Drone. By February 23, students are to submit a proposal to use the drone to report on a news story, or to build an application to make the drone more journalism-friendly.
The winning entry, either from a student or team of students, will win the drone.
"Help us chart a path for the responsible use of drones in news coverage and 'civic media' that educates and informs, while also adhering to the FAA’s hobbyist guidelines for unmanned aircraft," reads the contest website
