Drone journalism as a practice has come a long way since DroneJournalism.org was established on December 9, 2011. Since then, the field has gone beyond a futuristic concept to real aerial systems and news reports using unmanned aerial systems. On this website, we've had new drone journalists join the ranks, and several drone systems were built, tested and documented. Drone journalists submitted aerial video, and drone journalism developers for the first time obtained aerial photo mosaics - the precursor to aerial photomaps.
Development is ongoing, but it's a good time to reflect on how far the field has come and how far we have ahead of us. So please join myself (@matthew_ryan) and other drone journalism developers on Thursday, December 6, at 9pm EST / 6pm PST for a Twitter chat on drone journalism. We'll be using the Twitter hastag #droneJchat.
What is a drone, exactly? How would you use one in journalism? What are the laws and limitations of this technology? Where can a journalist start out? We'll try to answer these questions and more.
